I have used cable chains for years carrying mail in the rural mountains in wv. Do not use tensioners. TheChains will break after some time but as my route is spread out I am forced to drive on stretchs of cleared pavement. That does the damage to them. I buy new set every couple of years but I use mine more then most people would. There is easier sets to put on but cost more. I got these solely to be legal when going through the mountains. I have a 2014 Ford Escape (Titanium with 18" wheels). This vehicle is more than capable of getting through these areas without tire chains, however, in California it is law that in some areas you must have tire chains (or it is like a $500 fine...).
